The Red Lion Hotel: The Man in the Top Hat
The living. The dead. The unexplained.

Some photographs capture a moment. Others capture something that leaves us questioning exactly what we are looking at.
This photograph, taken at the historic Red Lion Hotel in Salisbury, appears to show the outline of a man standing behind an upstairs window.
At first glance, the building's old windows and surrounding architecture attract attention. But looking towards the right-hand window reveals something unusual.
Behind the glass is a pale, human-shaped formation. It appears to have a head, shoulders and torso, with an outline that resembles a gentleman wearing a tall hat.
There is no obvious explanation from the photograph alone.
Could this be an ordinary object, a reflection or an unusual interaction of light and shadow? Or could the camera have captured something that was not immediately apparent at the time?
What makes this image particularly interesting is the hotel's own history of reported paranormal activity.
The History Of The Red Lion
The Red Lion Hotel is one of Salisbury's most historic buildings, with origins dating back to approximately 1220.
Originally known as the White Bear Inn, the building was constructed to accommodate the draughtsmen involved in the construction of Salisbury Cathedral.
Over the centuries, it developed into an important coaching inn and became a familiar stopping place for travellers, merchants and mail coaches travelling between London and the West Country.
The hotel also became home to Salisbury's Post Office during the eighteenth century.
Its history includes military connections, with troops being accommodated there during the late eighteenth century and Australian soldiers staying at the hotel during the First World War.
The building has undergone considerable changes over the centuries, but important medieval features survive, particularly within its courtyard and older sections.
Today, it remains one of Salisbury's most recognisable historic hotels.
A Hotel With A Paranormal Reputation
The Red Lion is not simply a historic building with an interesting past. It has developed a considerable reputation for reported paranormal activity.
What makes this location particularly interesting is that the hotel itself openly acknowledges its haunted reputation and publishes accounts of experiences reported by guests and visitors.
Over the years, paranormal investigators, mediums and television crews have visited the property, including the team behind the television programme Most Haunted.
Several areas of the hotel have become associated with recurring stories.
The Alderman Suite – The Tall Man
Perhaps the most interesting report in connection with our photograph concerns the Alderman Suite.
According to the hotel's own account, guests have reported seeing a tall, thin man standing in the corner of the room.
A medium was reportedly invited to investigate and described a male presence.
There have also been accounts of a ghostly noose appearing and subsequently disappearing.
The identity of this alleged figure remains unknown.
Could the apparent gentleman in our photograph be connected to this reported presence?
The resemblance is certainly worth noting, although there is currently no evidence identifying the figure or establishing that it is the same apparition.
Room 33 – Footsteps From Above
Room 33 has become associated with reports of unexplained footsteps.
Guests have apparently heard movement coming from the room above and questioned the source of the noise.
The unusual detail is that Room 33 is situated on the top floor, with only an awkward-to-access attic space above it.
The reports have led to questions about who, or what, might be moving around overhead.
The Seamstress Suite – The Crying Girl
Another account involves the sound of a young girl crying.
The reports are associated with the Seamstress Suite, adding another story to the hotel's collection of unexplained experiences.
The identity of the alleged child is not established, and the reports remain part of the hotel's paranormal folklore.
Room 19 – The Hidden Children's Shoes
During refurbishment of Room 19, staff reportedly discovered a pair of medieval children's shoes concealed inside a wall.
The shoes were carefully returned to their hiding place after research into the historical practice of concealing shoes within buildings.
In earlier centuries, hidden shoes were sometimes used as protective objects, believed to ward off evil or unwanted influences.
The discovery provides a fascinating insight into the beliefs and customs of people who occupied historic buildings centuries ago.
The 1220 Bar
The 1220 Bar is another area associated with unexplained reports.
Accounts include sudden cold spots, unusual noises and objects apparently moving without explanation.
One particularly unusual story describes a cleaning notice being thrown across the room and allegedly captured on CCTV.
There are also reports of a glass smashing while sitting on a tray alongside other drinks.
As with all such accounts, these incidents have not been independently established as paranormal events.
The Photograph – The Man In The Window
The photograph examined by Time Travel Encounters contains an unusual formation in the upper-right window of the building.
Behind the glass appears to be a pale, upright figure.
The outline appears to show a head, shoulders and torso. The upper portion is particularly interesting, as it resembles the shape of a tall hat.
The figure appears to be facing towards the window, with a darker area beneath the head creating the impression of clothing.
The surrounding room appears considerably darker, making the pale formation stand out.
Several possible explanations must be considered.
A reflection in the glass could create the appearance of a figure inside the room. An object, decorative feature or item of furniture could also produce a similar outline.
Low-light photography can introduce unusual contrasts and digital artefacts that make indistinct objects appear more recognisable.
However, without a photograph taken from the same position in daylight, or confirmation of what was inside the room at the time, we cannot conclusively identify the shape.
Could It Be Connected To The Hotel's Haunting?
The most intriguing aspect of this photograph is its possible connection with the reported male presence in the Alderman Suite.
The hotel's own paranormal accounts describe a tall, thin man who is sometimes seen standing in the room.
Our photograph appears to show a similarly upright male-shaped formation, with an outline that could suggest historical clothing.
The hotel's long history as a coaching inn also provides an interesting historical setting.
For centuries, the building accommodated travellers, merchants, postal workers and military personnel. A gentleman dressed in a tall hat would not have been unusual during the nineteenth century.
Could the photograph have captured a figure associated with one of those earlier periods?
Could it be connected with the male presence reported elsewhere in the hotel?
Or are we looking at an ordinary object or reflection that has produced an unusually convincing human silhouette?
At this stage, we cannot answer those questions.
The TTE Conclusion
The Red Lion Hotel is a fascinating location, not only because of its extraordinary history but also because of the number of paranormal experiences reported by guests and investigators.
The hotel's own acknowledgement of its haunted reputation, together with recurring accounts of the tall male figure, footsteps, unexplained sounds and other incidents, makes it an interesting subject for further investigation.
The photograph of the apparent man in the window adds another intriguing piece to the story.
We are not presenting it as definitive proof of a ghost. Its identity and origin remain unverified.
However, the resemblance to the hotel's reported male apparition is something we believe deserves further examination.
A daylight comparison photograph, confirmation of the room's contents and further images from the same location would help establish whether an ordinary explanation can be found.
Until then, the figure remains unidentified.
And perhaps that is what makes this photograph so interesting.
The living. The dead. The unexplained.
Some goodbyes are never the end.
